![]() Exo-Suits make the wearer far stronger than normal, allowing him to lift and wield objects from the environment that would otherwise be too heavy. ![]() After encountering one of these at the end of Case 1, Frank will eventually be able to find them in special chests throughout the world. This installment adds a new tool to Frank's repertoire: Exo-Suits. Vehicles tend to instakill enemies (for reduced experience), and some even have mounted guns and other weapons for maximum carnage. Players get to ride or drive cars, golf carts, go-karts, Segways, tricycles, and more. ![]() Similarly, our hero will encounter a diverse array of vehicles with which to travel quickly and kill lots of enemies. No other game gives you as many crazy things with which to deliver beatdowns. Impractically awesome armaments include toy swords, holiday decorations, sporting equipment, video game consoles, monitors, and so much more. Practical weapons include baseball bats, pipes, axes, knives, pistols, and machine guns. Since Dead Rising 4 takes place in and around a mall, Frank will find plenty of unique weapons to use against the zombie hordes. Frank will encounter an occasional time section later in the game, but nothing that you wouldn't experience in other games – and it's so much for the better. The developers want players to be able to see and do everything, so no more ever-present time limit. And in the fourth entry, the in-game clock is gone entirely. Thankfully, Capcom Vancouver realized how unpopular the time limits were among players and restricted the time limit to a specific mode in Dead Rising 3. was extremely difficult, requiring careful planning and memorization or the use of a guide. Completing every objective, saving every NPC, etc. Each game operated according to a strict clock, with events happening at fixed times throughout the adventure. ![]() One element that conflicted with that freedom in the first few Dead Risings was their time limits. During each case, players have plenty of freedom to tackle missions, side-quests, and explore at their leisure. Frank's overall level, abilities, and other progress carries over between cases. These cases can be replayed at will, a welcome refinement compared to past games. So I'm sorry to say there will be no chainsaw-juggling clowns, no disgruntled postal workers that toss homemade bombs, no bondage fetishists with flamethrower penises (and yes, those are all real bosses from previous games).Dead Rising 4 is a sandbox-style action game divided up into seven Cases (chapters). The weird and terrifying bosses that defined the world of Dead Rising have been reduced to optional side quests, and none of them have their own cutscenes or sense of personality that previous maniacs had. But gone too are a few other staples that fans may miss. This is a fantastic improvement, letting players devote more effort to exploration and making their own fun. Instead, I started to memorize streets as the game bounced me back and forth across the same few locations.ĭead Rising 4 is the first in the series (aside from the Wii port of the original) to drop the timer system, which forced you to complete objectives within a constantly diminishing time limit. I often longed to return to the bright and colorful mall, but only rarely did the game direct me there. It's a strange and disappointing turn of pace to go from the mall - where there's an abundance of weapons and toys to play with, all within a few feet of each other - to the drab township of Willamette, where everything feels spread so far apart that I suspect the vast majority of my overall kills came simply from driving to and from objectives. The game takes place near Christmas, but I failed to notice any particularly festive decor on the streets other than the odd set of colorful lights. The overall map is divided into multiple sub-sections, but I honestly couldn't tell you any major differences between any of them other than one is slightly more residential, one is slightly more industrial. And while its depiction may be accurate to what a small town would be, it's not the most exciting setting for the zombie apocalypse. It's sleepy Colorado suburbia, with cottage houses and a small main street with mom-and-pop businesses. Unfortunately, like a conventionally attractive teen running from a zombie in a horror movie, this is where Dead Rising 4 trips and stumbles. The game's story, likewise, will soon push you out of the tourist trap that is the Megaplex and into the town proper. There are loads of them to try out, and seeking out blueprints becomes something of a treasure hunt, encouraging you to leave the mall and explore more of Willamette. Whether I was swinging a sledgehammer attached to propane tanks - creating mini-explosions with each hit - or shooting live swordfish into my enemies' chests, I was excited and giddy at trying each new weapon. Every combo weapon oozes personality in its design and feel.
